PRESENTATION SYNOPSIS
The ability to invade, growth and infection of microorganisms and viruses highlight the vulnerability of our biology,so it is important to look towards eye infections caused by pathogenic proliferation of multiple agents, which mainly affect contact lens users. It is therefore essential to recognize the clinical signs present in contact lens contamination and the effectiveness of Povidone Iodine (PVP‐I) and other contact lens care systems, which will provide an essential tool to apply in the clinical practice of contactology. In this course we will review the causes of microbial contamination of both contact lenses and their cases, and ocular manifestations, as well as the characteristics of contact lens care solutions, emphasizing the biocides of polyhexamethyl‐biguanide (PHMB), polyquaternium, hydrogen peroxide and povidone iodine (PVP‐I). A comparison will be made between the efficiency and limitations of the solutions, in order to provide the tools to select the best cleaning system, which not only provides targeted protection against bacterial, fungal and parasitic growth, but also its effect is lasting on both contact lenses and cases and does not cause toxicity on the ocular surface.
